REVIEW/GIVEAWAY of Irv’s Odyssey: Lost in a Looking Glass

Irv’s Odyssey: Lost in a Looking Glass was a groovy trip back to the 70s. As someone who was not even born in the 70’s, it was an eye opening trip to experience the life of a boy fresh out of college, who had the idealistic dreams that most of the young have, only to find out that life in not idealistic nor easy. Written in first-person narrative, it felt as if you were really there, having a not-so-normal conversation with Irv.

Irv was a film major, with big plans to be a director and make a difference. He found out quickly that getting a job was not easy and that his free ride was over as his father cut him off because he was “grown now”. With no choice but to put food on the table, and pay for his weed, Irv took the most unlikely job he could have ever imagined for himself: porn director. Lost in a world of naked girls that have sex to get paid, and have all the insecurities and problems that go along with it, Irv starts a downward spiral in the life he planned for himself.

Only looking for “real” love, Irv bumbles along the way. Through a (sometimes) drug-induced haze, shared sexual partners, free love, commune living, and a search for meaningful life, this story takes you from LA to Atlanta. From porn jobs to a job in a living community for mentally-challenged kids, Irv shows what life was like in the time of free love and drugs, when all he wants is love and all he finds is challenges. This heartwarming, and sometimes hilarious book, almost transcends times, to portray what youth goes through after leaving college and being forced to grow up. I give this book FIVE STARS and urge you to pick it up and give it a chance!

  1. What a lovely review! Thank you, Cynthia, for inviting Irv into your life and sharing his story. And thanks for inviting ME, as well. You are truly a “flower child”!

  2. Irv, does the guy on the cover of your book look like you? 😉 I can’t wait to read your book!

    • Hi Crystal, Actually the Irv avatar is me in my twenties.

I hope you DO read the series. You can go to Goodreads and check out the reviews. I’m proud of them.

  3. How much of irvs story is true? after reading the review its a book I definitely want to read!

    • Hi Kay,

The book is based on my life right after college and then continuing for five years. Of course I combined characters, switched some time-lines around and made up the dialogue. But still, it’s a fairly accurate description of a wild ride I went through, and the interesting people I met along the way.

  4. Okay, I had to do a google search because I wanted to know more about the trilogy because I wouldn’t want to enter if it wasn’t something I would truly be interested in. So after my search I choose the first thing google brought up and it was Irv’s Odyssey page. I looked around and checked out Who’s Irv. First off, let me just say how freakin awesome it is that you have two Emmys. I’m just a small town girl living in the Midweest, so that is major celebrity to me if you won Emmys and worked at all the studios because that is the dream I had when I was a kid. I wanted to work in Holywood but then reality set and now I’m a stay at home mom and wife with five kids. So my question isn’t about the books because honestly I like to read books without too much info on them. So I will ask who is the most awesome person you have ever had the pleasure of meeting and secondly if you could meet one person that is already deceased who would it be? sbereza22(at)gmail(dot)com

    • Congrats! You are the winner! 🙂

    • Well, Shannon, I’ve worked with a lot of stars and I’ve been so impressed by their talent. Some are sort of stuck up but most are not. Some I felt could be friends, like Nic Gage, Colin Farrell, Amanda Seyfried, Gerald Butler and Vanessa Hudgens, to name a few of the more recent actors I’ve spent some time with.

To name a star who has passed…well that would be Jack Lemmon. I worked with Jack on two movies. He never acted like the super star he was. He never needed to be catered to or given special anything. He always said, “Just call em Jack.” and he never complained about waiting for his time to work. Most of all, his acting skill and timing was incredible. Jack was great in every way. He was kind.

He once considered a script I wrote but eventually sent it back. I still have that copy because it has his coffee cup ring on the cover.

Congratulations on winning the trilogy. I’s really happy you’ll be reading my words!

      Irv
