Dr. Margo Pullman, a young researcher fresh off her tour of duty as a special ops soldier, blindly accepted a position at The Facility to work with Dr. Williams. Her first day there, she was given a tour and shown the subjects she was to study. Nothing, not West Point or medical school, could have prepared her for the gut maternal instinct she felt roar through her veins. She knew she needed to rescue the babies.
That night, she systematically destroyed all the files that chronicled Williams’ years of research perfecting the Infinite formula. She wrapped the children in blankets and stole them away from that place—from that monster.
Now, the Infinite Serum only exists locked in the genetic code of the three babies curled on the floor board of her back seat as she fled in the night. Margo knew the dangers. She knew they would be hunted to the ends of the earth by Dr. Williams who now not only wants his Infinite Serum back, but wants revenge. He has powerful friends and endless resources in his favor. Margo only has her determination and faith. With the help of a trusted friend, she changed her name to Margo Winter and named the children Meg, Alik and Evan.
As for the children, they lose their innocence the moment the inevitable happens: Williams finds them. The teens go through gut-wrenching battles and terrifying events all while trying to learn who and what they really are.
They never asked to be what Williams made of them. They never wanted to spend their lives running. With their beloved pet coyote, Maze, the children struggle to survive. Will they find the courage to stop running? Will the hunted ever become the hunter so as to rid the world of the pure evil?
Meg, Alik and Evan desperately try to live, laugh, love and fight side by side against an evil that wants to rip them apart, piece by bloody piece. Who will be left standing when the dust settles?

I grew up the only girl in the middle of two brothers. I adored both in their own ways, but never really fit into their worlds. Like my characters Alik and Evan, the boys were very different.
If I wanted a playmate, I had to gear up to go dirt-clod fighting, be the losing team of (broken) green army guys or brave the flimsy bicycle ramp my older brother was focused on.
Either that, or plan to help erect intricate Lego architecture while hearing the mathematical algorithms and possible big-bang theories of what happened to dinosaurs from my little brother.
Needless to say, I suffered a lot of skinned-up knees, elbows and even scraped off an eyebrow or two trying to keep up with the older brother and probably still have a Lego embeded into my thigh from sitting on the floor surrounded by the teeny-tiny pieces in my little brother’s realm. (Oh, and did I mention I hate math?)
Often by myself, recuperating from my brothers’ attentions, I created entire worlds of make-believe and adventure with my stuffed animals and books in my bedroom. Hours of storytelling, personally made sound effects and character voices entertained me to the point of utter happy distraction. Hindsight shows me, I’ve been a storyteller all my life.
Thanks to my brothers, I have a lot of stories to tell. I love you Jeremy and Field. You’re the best brothers a girl could have–even if you did scar me for life more than once.

Wow, great question Tina 🙂 As a mom of four and a fulltime teacher, the hardest part is definitely finding time to devote to my writing without feeling guilty that I ought to be doing something else. Thankfully, my husband completely supports my writing, so he picks up my slack. He’s my rock!

When naming your characters, do you give any thought to the actual meaning?
I do! There is a real hidden meaning behind Meg’s name. You’ll find out after reading book #2 *mischievous grin*. As for her brothers–Alik means “defender/warrior” (which is why his book is called Winter’s Warrior) and Evan means “young warrior.” Since he is the youngest of the boys, it fit perfectly. Two other characters’ names are anagrams (you’ll find out which after reading the books) and several others have special meaning to me personally. Sometimes I ask my husband or friends for help with naming a character. For instance, Danny (introduced in book 4) was named by my husband, Dan. 🙂 And sometimes they just seem to name themselves–like in the case of Meg’s best friend and pet Coyote, Maze. That was a fantastic question! Very near and dear to my heart! ❤

Thank you Rene 🙂 Yes, I have a wonderfully talented designer I’ve used for all five of the books. I usually find the picture I want him to use then he goes and works his magic with it. The end results have turned out pretty amazing. I’m so glad you have enjoyed them! Thank you. I am a cover addict and LOVE looking through other designers’ portfolios. It’s nice to see all the different talents out there. The thing is, even though i design my own covers, there may come a time where I need a different look or some custom illustration. Therefore, I’m always open to exploring other designers. Yes, I do have a family. Dan and I have been married almost seven years and have four children combined. (We’re a blended family.) The children range in age from the oldest at nearly 16 *gulp* and the youngest at 12. Three boys and one girl. Pretty much my house is full of teenage angst and attitude so Dan and I have to have a great sense of humor about life.
Dan is my best friend and amazingly supportive of my work as an author. Not only that, he storyboards with me and helps me talk through plot points and development. I may get stuck on writing about “the curve of his elbow as he swings and strikes” while Dan helps me step way back and see the direction of the story–like where the fight is taking me and what should happen next.
Thanks for asking about my family. 🙂 They have had to put up with many a sandwich or frozen meal because I’ve been “in the zone” writing–so I know they will appreciate you mentioning them!

Yikes, I forgot to mention my next project: Winter’s Legacy, the 6th and final book in this series is my current labor of love 🙂 It’s scheduled for launch October 2013. Afterward? Hmmm…that’s kinda a secret. Don’t worry, I’ll reveal all in October after the release! ❤

What helps you get over “writers block”?
Well, I *feel* like smashing my laptop against the nearst wall when I get stuck. *sheepish grin* But what I really do is try three things: 1) I set the timer and force myself to write nonstop for 5 minutes even if all I’m typing is, “I don’t know what to write. This is stupid. I hate when I get stuck. Oh well, I may as wel try to work this out. So I have this character doing this…” You get the idea. 2) I talk through my problem with my husband. He’s great about giving me suggestions. 3) If none of the above works, then I usually just need to step back for a while and come back to the writing with fresh eyes the next day. You’ve asked a great question, Zita! I have always been a storyteller and writing those stories and thoughts just seemed to come naturally to me. See, I was kind of more comfortable in the imaginary worlds I dreamed up than in real life. But to be honest, when I was little, I thought everyone spent time imagining elaborate stories and characters. It wasn’t until high school and college that I realized how different I was. *blush*
It never occurred to me that I could write a book. Four years ago, after reading another one of the many papers I had to write for my master’s classes, my husband turned to me and said, “Karen, you need to write a book.”
I’m sure I scoffed.
After he kept harping on me for about a year, I finally sat down with a notepad and drew a picture of a girl. She had long, dark, curly hair and large dark eyes. Her chin was held defiantly high and her body was in a battle-ready position. That was the start of Meg Winter. Book #1 was just me writing down her story…almost like I was her scribe as she told me about herself. That’s how real she was (is) to me.
Winter’s Awakening: The Metahumans Emerge was published in 2009, and I’ve been writing about the Winter Clan ever since.
I hope that answered your question without going into a full-blown soliloquy. *grin*
