2017 Rate Increase Bulletin

Price Increase for 2017 and Terms and Conditions Update

blog_price_increase_us

Editing Prices are going up on January 1, 2017. The prices go into effect for every manuscript done on and after January 1, 2017, even if it was scheduled for 2017 in 2016. The price goes into effect for every author, new and established.

The common rates through the Editorial Freelancers Associations are $40-60 an hour with the norm being an accepted ONE to six pages done in an hour. 250 words is considered a page. At my HIGHEST rate, six pages at 250 words a page only adds up to $13.50. I strive to keep my prices affordable for independent authors. It is my goal to help every book possible achieve its greatest potential, despite budget. Rate increases are necessary to keep a business running, but never will my prices jump to unachievable levels. I look forward to working with you in the coming year.

2016 Prices:

Proofread starts at: .0045 a word

Copy Edit starts at: .0060 a word

Copy/Proof starts at: .0080 a word

2017 Prices

Proofreads starts at: .0055 a word

Copy Edit starts at: .0070 a word

Copy/Proof Package starts at .0090 a word

The minimum price for under 20,000 words for each package will also increase according to the new prices.

terms

Terms and Conditions that may have been Modified or Added (These are in effect now)

I occasionally update my Terms and Conditions. It is a client’s responsibility to glance at it once in a while to see if anything has changed.

MANUSCRIPTS must be submitted in Times New Roman, size 12 font, and double spaced. If they are not, I will change them. It makes the editing process cleaner and easier.

I DO NOT edit non-fiction books. However, I will edit non-fiction articles, website material, press releases, and other such subject matter. I am also not familiar with UK grammar. I will edit UK books, but only if they are being completely Americanized. If you want to keep some UK tone, (colour instead of color, sayings, etc) that is fine. You just have to make sure to tell me. However, any and all grammar related issues I do recognize will be Americanized.

GRAPHIC and/or gratuitous rape scenes are not accepted. Books containing them are subject to IMMEDIATE return without refund or completion.

HOWEVER, books that contain rape are not an automatic no. A girl trying to get over being raped, a fade-to-black rape scene that is integral to the story, a book about rape that inspires hope in victims, a crime book that manages to impress the violence without making it graphic and pleasingly sexual, etc… would all be considered and most likely accepted. Please just explain the scenes to me. Erotica books that use rape as something pleasingly sexual, or any book that does, or any book that describes rape in graphic, violent, sexual, scene-by-scene detail, will not be accepted, and, if in a book I accepted without my knowledge, will be returned with NO REFUND OR COMPLETION.

AUTHORS are responsible for getting their books to me by the date agreed upon. If I have not received it within two days of the agreed-upon date, I will move on to the next in line, unless I have an email from the author and we agree on other terms.

RUSH jobs, which I very rarely take, will incur a fee. It will depend on length and time given to finish. The start amount is $100, and it goes up from there.

PLEASE be aware that books that need excessive editing outside of the package picked may lead to extra fees. The fees will be discussed with the author before any work is done. If while editing the book, excessive editing outside the package becomes a problem, progress will halt while the author is contacted. This rarely happens. However, I have had a book for proofread that the sample was great, but when I received the book, only the first two chapters were acceptable. The rest needed more of a developmental edit. This is the reason I ask for middle-of-the-book samples, although that is not always a foolproof method.

PAYMENT is accepted up front. An invoice is sent through PayPal when I receive the manuscript. No work will be done until invoice is paid in full. PayPal fees are calculated and added to final bill. A $100 cancellation fee will be charged if the client cancels their time slot less than a week before their date. A $50 cancellation fee will be charged if the client cancels their time slot less than two weeks before their date. This fee is strictly enforced.

*If an author contacts me and makes other arrangements to reschedule or cancel before the two-week mark, there is no fee. Be respectful of my time and let me know two weeks in advance if you cannot keep your spot.

PRICES are baseline prices. Each sample or manuscript is evaluated before a quote is given. Prices depend on how much work each individual manuscript needs. I am very fair, and baseline prices are given whenever possible. I encourage every author to self-edit at least twice and to use (good) beta readers BEFORE turning it in for editing. It is the best way to keep your prices down.

HOLIDAYS and holiday weekends DO NOT count toward the estimated amount of time given to edit your manuscript. Those times are spent with my family. We always take a vacation during the week of Thanksgiving and a week in the summer, usually in July. Please be respectful of those times. If any of those fall during your time period, please be aware of this.

Example: If you are given a time period over Christmas, please be aware the holidays will interfere with the edit time. Times given are estimates unless completely firmed up by way of a pre-order publication date. Two-week turnarounds are no longer given. Manuscripts are given my complete attention and are turned over in as timely a manner as possible. Please be patient.

I am NOT a developmental editor. I am a final-draft editor. If you are a FIRST-TIME author who needs extensive help with plot, character development, and flow, I would recommend that you hire a developmental editor to work with you before contacting me for copy/line and proofreading.

I reserve the right to refuse any and all manuscripts at my discretion.

RANDOM EDITING FACT #1

Random Editing Facts are short snippets I will place on the blog every now and then. Nothing big or fancy. Enjoy!

When writing, try to always remember this simple rule, and to implement it for every action.

(Yes, I’m pretty sure that ^^^ is a bodybuilder saying, but it works!)

You cannot pick something up, without eventually putting it down. You cannot walk through a locked door, without unlocking it. You cannot take a drink of something, unless you have a drink in your hand. You cannot walk outside, and then magically be back in your house, without the act of coming inside. You cannot walk up steps, without walking back down, unless you take an elevator. It goes for other things as well. Your character cannot be looking out the window at the wet, rainy day and walk outside right after the rain has stopped, sit on the grass, and not get her butt wet. That is unrealistic. Make that scene shine for you, or don’t use it. Don’t just choose to leave out the details that are getting in the way.

download

Also, another thing that people need to watch out for. If you have both hands full, say your character has a book in one hand and a toddler in the other arm, that character cannot grab a cup of hot coffee. What is the character going to grab it with? That elusive third arm?  We all sometimes wished we had one, but unless it is an alien book, it just doesn’t work.

Your character needs to put something down, before they can pick something else up.

Do you get my drift? Order of events, even the smallest of details, are important. Readers notice these things. They leave negative reviews because of them. They want things to make sense. Even if it is a fantasy land, readers want the smaller things acknowledged. In Harry Potter, even he still had to say Lumos to make the light on his wand come on, and Alohomora to unlock a door.

Review of Word and Breath by Susannah Noel

REVIEW BY CASSIE HOFFMAN

Word and Breath by Susannah Noel

What would you do if your life was turned upside down and your sister was kidnapped, how far would you be willing to go? That is what Riana will find out in Word and Breath.

Riana Cole a twenty-two-year-old reader who stays to herself and takes care of her handicapped sister and lives a quiet life. A life she prefers to stay just like that. She had to learn the lesson the hard way by watching her family killed, because they were too rebellious by challenging the Union. So she tries to not bring any attention to her and that is the way she likes it.

Riana is a “Reader”. What is a Reader you ask? Since the world we have known is now changed after the Cataclysm a few centuries ago. With the new society came the Union, which provided stability the people were craving. With everything changed, reading was discouraged with other things and that is how the Union likes it. Only a few can read and with that talent Riana is a few of the people who shuffle through papers to find clues that the “Front” have put in them. It could range from a menu, card, newspaper you name it. You just never know where the clue might be and that is Riana’s job to find them.

After a bad day at work, it only gets worse for Riana when she is mugged—thankfully there was someone to help her and that person is Mikel. There is a reason he was there just at the right time. Mikel was sent to sniff out if she is a trader to the Union. Will he decisive and betray Riana, to top it off Mikel is a Soul-Breather, but Riana doesn’t know that fact yet. Trying to get information from Riana, by touching her skin and every time he touches her, she feels a spark. Finally she is opening up to someone of the opposite sex, well anyone at all since her friend Conner disappeared and now Mikel was hired to pretend to like her….Or will he fall for her??

Soon one of Riana’s colleagues, Jenson, confides in Riana and lets her know he is a part of the Front and ask if she wants to join since she is mainly the only one left who knows the Old Language. Is he crazy!? She has lived a quiet life and stayed under the radar. Will she take the opportunity Jenson has offered her, or turn him in?

Everything Riana has known will be turned upside down and shaken, when her sister Jannie disappears, without a trace. There is no clue to what happen to her. Who would do this and why?

With her life possibly in danger, Riana has to go in hiding and hopefully she will be able to find her sister and figure out why this has all happen? I know why but you will have to wait. Tee hee hee!

If not having to worry about finding her sister isn’t enough, Riana gets a HUGE surprise when she finds out her friend Connor is alive and well. He went underground and is a big part of the Front. Connor has been gone for years; will she be able to forgive him?

Mikel is also battling his own self, because he is now falling for Riana and will do anything he possibly can to protect her from the people who hired him to go after her.

Will Riana be able to rescue her sister with the help of both Mike and Connor and what will she do with the new knowledge she has discovered she possesses? In the end will a Soul-Breather and Riana fall in love and for once in her life will she have more than her sister in it? I guess you will just have to see

Word and Breath is a great read. It’s in the genre of Dystopia, plus a little romance and maybe a bit Paranormal and I usually don’t prefer these kind of reads, but this book sucked me right in from the beginning. I wanted to know what was going on and find out FAST! The author knows how to write and spin a story that will keep her readers wanting more. I loved all the characters in the book,, they each brought their own little spice to the book and I enjoyed how she had it where it wasn’t coming just from one person’s point of view, that part I thought was really neat. Plus throw in there a love story and you got a great book. I am excited to see where she goes in the next, you will understand once you’ve read it…I don’t want to give too much away. I give this book 4 STARS!!!

 Quotes from the Book:

“She deserves to know the truth. It’s not just politics and cover maneuverings. We’re talking about the difference between truth and lies. I don’t like seeing her every day, talking to her, and being forced to keep her in the dark about something so important.”- Jenson

“I don’t want you to be that person. I just want you to be you.”- Riana

“You have no idea what my life was like before. I’m not a good man, and I can’t be like Connor, always trying to make the world better. But, if you want to help him, if you want to do something good, then I want you to do that. I’m not about to let you go. The only good in my life—the only good I’ve ever known—is you.”- Mikel

Review/GIVEAWAY of “Fluke” by Bart Hopkins and David Elliott

(Giveaway details at the end: Please read review first!)

Adam Fluke is your average nice guy that is a little too old to not know where his life is going. In his late twenties with a pizza delivery job, Adam Fluke is going nowhere fast. Then, he meets the girl of his dreams on a delivery. After she tells him to call her when he gets off, he takes off back to his job and ups and quits right then, leaving behind a girl at work who was a “possibility”, who also plays a big part in the book.

Now unemployed, and prone to what his friends call “The Fluke Factor”, which pretty much means whatever he can f*** up he will, even if he is just tripping over his own feet, Adam falls head over heels for a girl that seems perfect, though there are some things about her that give him pause. Such as the fact that she will go into her own head and be totally unresponsive when her name is called. Also the fact that she whispers at one time, “You just look so much like him…”

Sara and Fluke instantly become thick as thieves. Fluke revolves his whole life around her, and Sara seems to be a good influence on him. Sara is an assistant curator at a museum, and he feels inadequate up against her education and job. She encourages him to get a job and go back to college. They adopt a teddy bear and Sara names it Flukey.

But once again the “Fluke Factor” pops up and after a small scare and a terrifying possibility, brought on by one photograph, Sara and Fluke go on a trip that could change their lives…that does change their lives…forever.

Fluke is a wild ride that has SO many laugh-out-loud and WTF moments. The whole time I was reading the book I had that country song “Crazy Girl” going through my mind. Even though what I was expecting to happen never really came to fruition. I definitely did not have the storyline figured out like I thought I did though. I never would have guessed what happened. And now I have you all crazy wondering what happened, huh? LOL, well the only way to find that out is to read it. I will just say that Fluke was unexpected in a good way. I literally laughed and cried before I finished this book, with my emotional turmoil skyrocketing all the time. One minute you will be fine and the next minute your stomach will take a nosedive in disbelief. I refuse to tell you more of the storyline because all of the little tidbits are what make it…and if I tell you now I will ruin it for you. I totally related to all of the characters, they were believable and engaging. The storyline hooked me in and did not let me go. I was horrified at the ending. Bart, I just want to say that the ending was not fair…I was left wanting to know more(!), but I was satisfied overall with the ending. Oh, and Terri (Wonder-Woman) Kickner, thanks for the heads up to have tissues handy…I needed them!   All-in-all, this is a read that is not to be missed. I give Fluke 5 stars.

Quotes from the Book:

“It doesn’t matter who the hell you are or what the hell she is, when the lights are out and you make the beast with two backs, it just doesn’t matter brother. All that matters is that moment.”

“You can’t polish a turd, son.”

“Fluke, you’re in love. And apparently someone’s in love with you at the same time.”

“Sometimes, not going on is the right thing.”

Once again if I have talked you into reading this book, please leave the author a review where you bought it. Every review helps the author. You can buy it on Amazon with the link below the cover.
