J.L. McCoy’s ‘The Original Sin’ (Book 3) Review and Swag Pack Giveaway

Review by Cassie Hoffman

The Original Sin

(BOOK 3 in the Skye Morrison series. Spoilers if you haven’t read the first two)

Skye Morrison is a twenty-three year old woman who is on the top of the world. Getting the best job you could imagine, finding out vampires are real and falling for two of them, but after being kidnapped and tortured by the “Original” first vampire, now she is asking herself if she should even be in this world that she didn’t even knew existed until a little over a month ago.

Skye is having a hard time coming to terms with being kidnapped and trying to go on with her life like it was before. Being forced to live with vampires until they can find Amun and kill him she is now not able to go anywhere by herself. This includes her and all the other vampires in the family.

Skye and Jameson have made it official and are head over heels with each other. Skye got her crush, but she is still has feelings for Jameson’s brother/maker Archer. (WHAT DOES A GIRL DO!)

Since being kidnapped and almost dying, Skye has been having nightmares starring Amun. He comes to her in her dreams, and every time she wakes up screaming. Keeping her dreams of Amun a secret from Jameson and Archer is getting harder to do.

After waking up one night in a panic, Skye goes to Archer and tells him what has been happening. With the secret out, Archer has no choice but to surprise an attack of Skye to make sure she isn’t a Trojan Horse for Amun. The vampires literally mind rape Skye to see if she is a Trojan. Skye once again is knocking on Heaven’s door thanks to a vampire.

After being forcibly held down and having the vampires enter her mind without her permission, she no longer can trust any of them, which include her own boyfriend Jameson. Breaking up with Jameson and not talking to the other vampires in the house, Skye secludes herself and falls into a depression.

With Skye not feeling safe and not trusting them she ask to go back to her own home with a guard, but soon everything turns more upside down for Skye. What more can go wrong in this girl’s world?

Just like the previous two books, The Original Sins was just as good and filled with ups and downs. A lot of questions get answered, but were also left with a BIG question at the end. You may find yourself like I did saying “OH MAN, NO!” Lol. I felt for Skye, she lost trust in everyone around her and had no idea who she could turn to. In The Original Sins we FINALLY get some Skye and Jameson fun… Like always the characters are just as funny, making you wish you had some friends like them. J.L. McCoy left us with TO BE COUNTINUED…. And I can’t wait to sink my fangs into the next book, to see what the hell is going on with Skye. Once again I give this book Five GOTHIC stars!!!

QUOTES FROM THE BOOK:

“You guys just aren’t fair, between your vampire pheromones and your gorgeous good looks, we humans just don’t stand a chance.”- Skye

“I’m not staying Archer, I can’t trust you not to hurt me again if it serves whatever purposes you decide to come up with that day. I want nothing more to do with you…with any of you. I’m done with vampires. You all have done nothing but bring me pain since I met you.”- Skye

“This isn’t the girl I fell in love with. My sweet, giving, patient, loving, caring, fun-loving Skye disappeared when you were kidnapped. I’m so scared I’ll never get her back.”-Archer

REVIEW OF RYAN HUNTER’S ‘INDIVISIBLE’

AMAZON SYNOPSIS

Brynn Aberdie has everything but freedom … but everything has a way of changing.
When Brynn loses her family, her security, and her handouts, she is left with one last option, and it guarantees one of two things: freedom or death.

Brynn vows to find that freedom, and soon learns a lesson many in One United have already learned – by failing to protect their rights, Citizens have forfeited their lives with little hope to ever recover them.

MY REVIEW

All of you know that I am fond of dystopian/post-apocalyptic. I would even go as far as saying at this point in my life they are my favorite genre. This is a great dystopian book that I am glad I got the chance to read.

Brynn Aberdie lives in what is called the One United. This takes place in the future where all of North American has joined together into one nation, people are microchipped with their every move tracked by the government, supposedly for their own safety, and their lives are mostly controlled by the government. They live underground in energy-saving homes. Their lives are in essence, mapped out for them. They have no control. Their every word is listened to and their freedom contingent on their willingness to be sheep.

After the death of her father in what the One United calls a terrorist attack, Bree’s life is changed forever. Along with a boy named T, Bree throws off the conventional chains and takes off in search of freedom.

This book is action-packed. I literally could not put it down. Bree was a very likable character and T is just what you would expect in a boy that turns her life upside down. Bree goes through so much on her quest for freedom. There are so many twists and turns that you just do not expect. Plus, the little bit of romance makes it sweet. This is one book that you do not want to miss.

Quotes from the book:

“Equality in the classroom means equality in life.”

“We were modified, Brynn.”

“Two of us – and you think we can change the world?

“I worry about you, about anything happening to you, because I truly love you, every bit of you.

It also introduces a bunch of never before published authors such as Nicki Scalise (co-owner of the awesome Thousand Lives Book Blog and Page Turners Facebook page), Kimberly Hennessy (owner of Moutful of Words Blog), Heather Kirchoff, and Jocelyn Sanchez. GUEST POST/GIVEAWAY FROM AUTHOR ROBERT BRYNDZA

Today we have Robert Bryndza joining us for a FANTASTIC guest post and giveaway!

*****

How do authors choose the genre in which they write? Does the genre choose them? I ask this question because I never dreamed, as a guy I would end up writing Women’s Fiction – and I think it chose me.

As a writer, one of the most important factors in marketing your book and communicating to your readers, is genre. Say the name Stephen King and you know he writes horror, Stephenie Meyer; Vampires, JK Rowling; Children’s/Harry Potter. Although, her recent move to Literary Fiction with The Casual Vacancy left many fans in shock. Such was the power of the genre she inhabits that many readers were completely horrified it wasn’t another book about boy Wizards.

JK Rowling has told how she had the idea for Harry Potter on a train in 1990, that he arrived fully formed in her head, the genre it seems chose her. Did her frame of mind or surroundings influence her that
day? What if she had being doing tequila shots in a sleazy bar – could Harry Potter have been some flawed detective or Serial Killer?

The great thing about working on self-publishing platforms is that genre matters less, well less to readers than authors, we still need to make sure we market our work effectively and genre is a fundamental part of this, but more writers have the freedom to switch and experiment. The cost and time it takes to release a book has gone from months to hours, e-books are cheaper, shopping easier. These factors give both readers and authors more freedom to experiment. A virtual bookshelf will never be cleared if the novel fails to sell in that all-important first month. Books can be nurtured and grow their audience.

So how did I choose the genre I write in? Again, I think it chose me. I love to make people laugh, its one of the most potent and powerful things. The Not So Secret Emails Of Coco Pinchard began from wanting
to make people laugh, and initially it had a male voice, the character that became Coco Pinchard’s husband Daniel. He remains a great character, but as I wrote I found that Coco seemed to be the one that
all the fun stuff was happening to, she was more wonderfully flawed, and prone to disaster. After several of my earlier readers agreed, I switched to Coco’s voice and The Not So Secret Emails Of Coco Pinchard
was born.

Do I worry about writing in this genre dominated by so many brilliant female writers? Well, not now. In an early discussion with a Literary Agent, he told me that I should be prepared to change my name, and
consider using a female pen name. “People might not think a guy can write as a woman,” he said. I quickly realised that this is ridiculous. No one told Patricia Cornwell she couldn’t write crime thrillers because she’s never committed murder, or Stephenie Meyer because she’s never drunk blood. Silly examples I know but so is the argument. Nick Hornby is a British writer I greatly admire for his skills as a storyteller, two of his novels Juliet Naked and How To Be Good are written brilliantly from a female point of view.

Many things have excited me about the digital publishing revolution. The shift of a little more power to authors, the freedom to be paid higher royalties, the freedom to write what we want. The second book I
have recently released is Bitch Hollywood (co-written with Ján Bryndza) a dark comedy about life in the Hollywood Hills. My next book will be a sequel to The Not So Secret Emails, then I want to write a Thriller – a radical departure from what I’ve written before, and you know what, I can do it. I am excited to see what other writers will produce in the years to come, both well-known names from publishing houses, and best selling Indies. Exciting times are ahead for all of us.

J.L. McCoy’s ‘Sins of the Father’ Review/Giveaway

Reviewed by Cassie Hoffman

Skye Morrison and her gorgeous vampire guys are back in Sins of the Father. Goth, vampires, wolfs, OH MY! When Blood of the Son ended it ended on a cliff hanger with us guessing what would happen next. Sins of the Father picks right up where the first book left off.

Archer Rhys friend and business associate Greyson Mead, was found brutally murdered and dismembered while visiting the popular night club The Mausoleum, in the curtained off PVIP lounge with a message carved into his torso “THE BLOOD OF THE SON SHALL PAY FOR THE SINS OF THE FATHER”. What kind of person could kill an elder, without being seen or heard?

With other vampires being found just like Greyson, brutally murdered, it can only mean one thing. There is a vampire, or similar blood drinking creature, out there consuming vampire blood and leaving no witness. With An Dilis “The Faithful”, which is the equivalent of the human military being calling in, everyone knows this is serious.

Never knowing who could be next, Skye and Jameson finally give into what they are feeling. Skye finding out that Archer is married to Aoife, and having caught them in a compromising position, broke Skye’s heart and opened it up for Jameson. Letting her feelings for Jameson be known, giving herself to him and giving her blood to him, they bond in ways she could never have fathomed.

A perfect night with Jameson ends and they wake up to both of their vehicles destroyed and two heads lying in in the front seat of Skye’s car. One of the heads is Skye’s ex-stalker boyfriend. What did he do and why did they kill him?

Archer decides to have all his children stay with him and now this includes Skye. Fearing, none of them are going to take that chance. With all their lives on the line and having to be on high alert and still not having a clue who is behind the murders of their families. Everyone is keeping their guard up.

While given a day off from working at The Mausoleum, Skye goes into town and hangs out with an old friend Sissy and drinks a few cold ones. Skye sees a familiar face, a handsome man she has danced with a few times at the club, Dic. After talking Dic and Skye decide to have dinner and catch up. But, something is off and Skye can’t put her finger on it.

After Archer calls to check in on her, he finds out that she is with and freaks out, demanding she comes back to the club now. She doesn’t understand why Archer is acting so crazy. She will soon find out something that she couldn’t ever imagine could be real. Just last week she found out vampires were real, now she finds out Dic is a wolf. A wolf!

After Dic drops Skye off, him and Archer start arguing. Skye leaves, she can’t take it anymore, she starts walking to the parking garage a few blocks away where she left her car at. But, she isn’t alone someone is following her. After an altercation, she finds herself waking up in a dark basement, handcuffed to a water pipe in the middle of the room.

Will Skye be rescued? Can they find her and save her in time? The one who has been killing vampires now has Skye. What does he want with Skye? Will she make it out alive? These are the questions that Skye Morrison will face in Sins of the Father.

Picking up where I left off with Blood of the Son, I loved how J.L. McCoy left us with a cliff hanger wanting more and needing to find out what was going on. She answers a lot of the questions we wanted to know and fills us in with everything we need to know in Sins of the Father, and leaving us aching for more of Skye and Jameson. I absolutely love this series! The characters are awesome and they each have their own little quirks. I love Skye, Jameson and Archer, but I love our gay vampire Trey and we get more of him and get to see Skye and his friendship grow even more. We get to learn more about the vampires and where they come from and how they started. What is a vampire book without a kick ass love scene, well we got one in Sins of the Father and I want to see a LOT more of Jameson and Skye! I love the whole feeling of this book; I seriously got lost in it and didn’t want it to end. Bravo again to J.L for hitting it out of the ball park again and of course I give it 5 Gothic stars!!!!

Quotes from the Book:

“I took your life blood as I made love to you Skye. I took a piece of you into me as you shared yourself with me completely. I can feel you inside of me, my love. Your blood warms my heart. I can feel your very essence pumping through my veins, fusing together with my own. I feel you everywhere.”- Jameson

“Jesus. What is it with you guys always interfering in my shit? You know, if something is bothering me, I’m perfectly capable of taking care of it myself. I’m not some damsel in distress, Archer. I don’t need to be rescued, damn it.”- Skye

“You hurt me and I needed him. He lessened the pain in my heart and I desperately needed that. He kissed away my tears and showed me that love doesn’t have to hurt, Archer. I made love to your brother because I wanted to. I made a mistake choosing you over him and wanted to make it right, before I lost him forever.”- Skye

“Bro? Did you seriously call me Bro? I’m 900 years old.”- Hagan

Beyond the Veil Blog Tour and Scavenger Hunt (83)

Overview

Though the Serbian pack has been brought to heel thanks to the downfall of their Alpha, the war is far from over. Desdemona, a witch of unfathomable power, has escaped the wolves’ wrath, but she will not go quietly into the night. She takes refuge in a place where even the smallest sliver of light does not dare to enter. Though she had to flee, she has not given up on the treasure she wishes to acquire. Her depravity knows no bounds; she’s even willing to search for the one who can assist her in opening a Veil that has not been opened in millennia – with good reason: the danger is incalculable. Meanwhile, there are major changes rippling through the Romanian Grey wolves. Decebel has become Alpha to the Serbian pack in an effort to begin to unite the Canis lupis species. Their numbers are dwindling in the wake of the shortage of true mates and lack of offspring. The wolves are beginning to lose faith and darkness seems to be crashing in on them from all sides.

Project Ele and Finding Ele (2 Reviews & Giveaway)

Today I am going to be doing a double review on the Ele Series by Rebecca Gober & Courtney Nuckels. These books rocked my world, combining my love of paranormal with my recent passion of post-apocalyptic/dystopian. That is one combination you can’t beat. If you haven’t read the books only read the first review, that way I don’t spoil anything for you. The first book is FREE on Amazon and Smashwords and TWO lucky people will win a signed bookmark!

PROJECT ELE

The book starts off with fifteen year old Willow waiting in a huge line with her family. Why? To be screened to see if they eligible to get into a shelter. Willow lives in a post-apocalyptic world which came from a “virus brought forth from a cure”. In trying to rid the world of disease they brought forth a super virus that has been killing people off at an alarming rate. Life as they knew it stopped, children were home schooled and people were afraid to leave their homes. The government implemented Project Ele, which is raising the temperature of the earth to exceedingly dangerous degrees in hopes that it will kill off the virus. The shelters were set up to protect human life, but you have to be healthy with no latent disease in you, and you have to pass rigourous screening to be let inside. Once inside the screening, Willow learns that her and her father are accepted…but the rest of the family is not. With her family torn apart, Willow enters the shelter. Inside life is totally different. Forced to work, Willow meets many kids inside that she connects with, one being her boss. Connor, Claire, and Alec become Willow’s rocks. Together the four of them decide to explore theirselves out of their boredom, finding WAY more than they baragained for. This book is filled with emotion, suspense, action, and a good dose of unique paranormal. I read this book in a day and was SO thankful that I already had book two in my hands. The cliffhanger at the end will have you begging for more. I’m not gonna say much more because I dont want to spoil it. Lets just say that I was suprised at the way the book turned out and that I have found a new pair of authors to love. The small grammatical errors did not detract from the story in my opinion. The book is just too good to care…and this is coming from an editor!

Life on the outside is full of danger. The Reapers are out to take lives and take powers. Stuck searching for her friends, not knowing if they are alive or dead, worrying that her mother’s people won’t accept her, learning how to protect herself in this new, scary world, and getting a hot bodyguard that wants to be more, has Willow’s head spinning. BODY AND SOUL

AMAZON SYNOPSIS:

Kate, the daughter of a lawyer and marine biologist, has just moved to a small beach town in Florida. She’s forced to start over in the middle of the summer, but is used to it by now, since she’s moved around her entire life. When Kate meets Rico and Adriana on her second day at the beach house, everything changes. Kate is introduced to the world of Light and Darkness, and is thrown into the middle of it when a mysterious being attacks her one night. As Kate’s nights continue to get weirder, her friendship with Rico and Adriana grows stronger, and for the first time Kate has real friends. When Rico sits Kate down to tell her what is really happening to her, things start to click for Kate, and she is forced to make a decision to quit or fight for her body and soul.

MY REVIEW:

Jamie Loeak’s debut novel, Body and Soul, was a suprising twist on demons and romance. I have to admit that it started off slow and that at first I did not connect with any of the characters. I just thought that the characters seemed fake and their reactions unrealistic. If someone told me a demon was after my soul I would just show a little more reaction, lol. BUT, as the story progressed so did the characters. I have to admit to being suprised a number of times. I never saw it coming and I always enjoy that in a book. The main characters, Kate, Adriana, and Rico went through a number of things together. I was not very fond of Kate some of the time, but she held up in the end. Adriana and Rico were my favorite. I loved Adriana’s attitude and Rico, well, who doesn’t love a boy named Rico ? 😉 Long story short, a demon is after Kate, and Rico and Adriana have set out to save her, only Kate wants to help save herself. Full of suprising twists and turns, Body and Soul is a great debut novel. It is definitely worth the read and the $2.99. The end of it makes up for the slow beginning. You will be glad that you made it through the beginning and look forward to many more from Jamie Loeak.
